Welcome to the Pediatric special edition of Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery. You have an outstanding array of articles before you, including a new feature, “Contemporary Review.” But first I want to set the stage for this edition.

Facial plastic and reconstructive surgery has been around in some form for over 100 years, starting with greats such as Jacques Joseph, Sir Harold Gilles, John Orlando Roe, Gustave Aufricht, Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach, and Robert Weir. Later there were John Conley, Samuel Fomon, Maurice Cottle, Irving Goldman, Richard Webster, and Jack Anderson, to name a few. Credibility of the specialty grew. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was founded in 1964. Numerous fellowships have developed subsequently, and there are now over 40.

As medical specialties have matured, there has been a natural progression toward pediatric subspecialization. This is happening in facial plastic surgery as more practitioners are developing …
