In an effort to provide expanded continuing education opportunities, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently launched the Plastic Surgery Education Network (PSEN) at psenetwork.org. The site, created by plastic surgeons for plastic surgeons, is designed as a one-stop-shop for surgeons in group and private practice to view the latest news and techniques from a personal computer or mobile device. ASPS partnered with the following subspecialty societies in order to meet the needs of all plastic surgeons:
- American Association for Hand Surgery (AAHS)
- American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS)
- American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons (ASMS)
- American Society for Peripheral Nerve (ASPN)
- American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM)
- American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons (ACAPS)
- Plastic Surgery Research Council (PSRC)
Access to PSEN is free to members of the aforementioned professional societies and is designed for surgeons to browse the material most relevant to them, and add courses of interest to the "My Learning Plan" feature. The Network provides CME courses, procedural videos, case reports and personalized self assessment tools. The on-demand design of PSEN means continuing education courses can be accessed at any time and completed at any pace.
A team of medical editors are responsible for the content on PSEN, including editor-in-chief Al Aly, MD, professor of plastic surgery at the University of California, Irvine. Subspecialty section editors were selected by the participating societies.
"The Plastic Surgery Education Network promises to be the ultimate educational tool for plastic surgeons of all levels - young and old, experienced and inexperienced, beginner and expert," Dr. Aly says. "It is very exciting to be involved in building what promises to be one of the most widely utilized plastic surgery education tools in the history of the specialty." PSEN participants are not limited to the courses and content designed by the editors, as the Community area offers message boards for members to discuss and exchange ideas.
"We are really excited about the debut of this new online resource. It will provide plastic surgeons with learning tools for every style and phase of practice, from residency to retirement," said ASPS President Phillip Haeck, MD. "Its resources will only continue to grow and deepen in the months and years to come."
An overview of PSEN can be viewed here. PSEN is supported in part by The Allergan Foundation, Mentor Corporation and Obagi Medical Products, Inc.
